Horizon cancels five Santa Rosa flights because of landing-gear issue

SONOMA COUNTY -- Horizon Air cancelled five of six scheduled flights in and out of Charles M. Schultz-Sonoma County Airport today after aircraft manufacturer Bombardier reported two incidents of landing gear failure on its Q400 planes in less than a week.

Horizon uses the Q400 for all of its Santa Rosa flights. The airline said it cancelled 113 of its 481 total scheduled flights today and grounded 19 of its 33 Q400 aircraft.

The two landing gear failures occurred on Scandinavian Airlines flights, and resulted in a crash landing in Denmark on Sunday and a second one in Lithuania today.

Following today’s incident, Bombardier recommended that airlines ground all Q400’s that have at least 10,000 takeoff and landing cycles. Horizon said it will not know how long its planes will be grounded until it receives more technical details about the incidents from Bombardier.

The only Santa Rosa flight not canceled today is scheduled to arrive from Los Angeles International Airport at 8:30 p.m.
