Dr. Bredesen was the founding CEO of the Novato-based institute for the study of the diseases and conditions of aging. He oversaw its growth to 15 laboratories and 250 employees. It plans to employ 550 scientists and other staff in 10 years.

Under Dr. Bredesen the Buck was designated a Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Biology of Aging, one of five so designated centers in the U.S.

He leaves to spend more time on a private startup health promotion and disease prevention company that he recently co-founded.

"Dale's efforts and leadership have turned a fledgling research effort into a world-class institute that is successfully tackling the greatest biomedical challenge of our time -- addressing chronic disease through the common lens of age," said Buck board of trustees Chairman E. Lewis Reid.

Dr. Bredesen will remain on the Buck team as a principal investigator of his lab and help find a suitable replacement as CEO.

"While I plan to continue my research to achieve my goal of finding treatments for neurological disease, I look forward to having more time to build a company that helps people optimize their health," said Dr. Bredesen. "My tenure at the Buck has reinforced my belief that increasing the healthy years of life is rooted in prevention and health promotion."
