SANTA ROSA, May 15, 2008 -- Outdoors-oriented retail chain Recreational Equipment Inc., REI, plans to install solar-electric systems on its Santa Rosa store this year as part of a pilot project at 11 stores in California, Oregon and Texas.

The Seattle-based retailer will be installing photovoltaic panels on the roofs of six other California stores, located in Arcadia, Folsom, Sacramento, San Carlos, San Diego and San Francisco. Davis-based Blue Oak Energy is the electrical engineer for the project, and Offset Energy also of Davis is installing systems in California.

The system for the 23,500-square-foot Santa Rosa store will produce 90 kilowatts.

REI expects the 11 installations to generate a total of 1.1 megawatt-hours per year, or enough to power 117 homes.
